What is UTI?

 As the name suggests, UTI is a urine infection that occurs when bacteria enter into your urinary system and multiplies there. It can occur anywhere from kidney or bladder to ureters or urethra. This is an uncomfortable problem since it gives a burning sensation while peeing or even pain in the pelvic area. It affects millions of people all over the world every year but women are more prone to getting a UTI as compared to men.

Urinary Tract Infection is known as  “Mutravaha Sroto Vikara” in Ayurveda and is a result of an imbalance of doshas in our body. Our body comprises of three doshas, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. UTI’s are commonly associated with an imbalance in the Pitta Dosha, but Vata and Kapha dosha can also contribute to it. This imbalance can be a result of multiple factors discussed above but you don’t need to worry as there are various home remedies for Urine infection in Ayurveda that can help treat UTI without rushing to a medical professional.

Types of Urinary Tract Infection

UTI or Urinary Tract Infection is usually of two types, i.e. Symptomatic and asymptomatic. Symptomatic UTIs can be further divided into two types:

  • Lower Urinary Tract Infection (This includes bladder and urethra)
  • Upper Urinary Tract Infection (Kidneys)

Ayurvedic home remedy for Urine infection

Triphala is an effective way of treating UTIs at home. Simply take one tablespoon of Triphala powder with lukewarm water post-dinner. Triphala is made up from three fruits i.e. Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki. These work together to reduce inflammation and fight any bacteria present in the urinary tract.

Natural remedies for urine infection

Turmeric milk or adding turmeric powder to your food can aid in the treatment of Urinary Infections. Turmeric is known as the golden spice in Ayurveda due to its exceptional anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which is due to the presence of curcumin.

Indian home remedies for urine infection in females

Make a kadha using Amla, Giloy, Ashwagandha, Ginger and Gokshura. Take all of these five herbs and add it to 200 ml of water. Boil this mixture until you’re left with half of the mixture i.e. 100 ml. Take 10-20 ml of this decoction for a few days.

How do I stop the burning sensation after urinating immediately?

Amla has antimicrobial anti-bacterial properties which provides relief from the burning sensation after peeing. It also has diuretic properties which is why it soothes the inflamed mucosa of urinary tract. It is rich in Vitamin C that boots immune system and fight the infection.

Drink Amla juice with a teaspoon of honey and see the results yourself. If you don’t prefer drinking juice then you can also add amla to your food or make a powder of it and consume it with a glass of lukewarm water.

How can garlic be used to cure a urinary tract infection?

Take 1-2 cloves of raw Garlic and chew it in the morning. You can also include garlic into your food. Garlic is known for its anti-bacterial properties that helps fight the bacteria that is causing the UTI.

Effective drinks for UTI

Cranberry juice is very beneficial for the treatment of Urinary infections. Drink one glass of cranberry juice everyday and make sure you’re having freshly made juice, not the packages one.

Another effective juice is that of Aloe vera. Drink freshly prepared Aloe vera juice once a day. It’s pretty simple to make, just take 2 table spoon of fresh Aloe vera gel and blend it with one cup of water and your Aloe vera juice is ready.

Ayurveda recommended diet for UTI

  • Drink lots of water as it helps flush out the bacteria from the system. Make sure you’re drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water every day.
  • You can also include fluids like Barley water or Coconut water into your diet to increase the amount of fluids you consume.
  • Avoid oily and spicy foods that may cause inflammation as it can worsen the existing symptoms.
  • Include fruits like watermelon and cucumber in your diet that are rich in water.
  • Take a balanced diet including salads and yogurt.
  • Stay away from excessive dairy, processed food and non-veg for a while.
  • Avoid alcohol as much as you can.

Lifestyle Modifications to Prevent UTI

  • It is essential to maintain good hygiene for preventing UTIs. Make sure you’re properly cleaning the area and not using any harsh soaps or other products that may irritate the skin.
  • Switch tight fitted clothes with loose and comfortable clothing. Also switch your innerwear to cotton as it is more breathable and will keep the area dry.
  • Avoid holding urine for long period of time as it can increase the risk of bacterial growth in the urinary tract.
  • Practice yoga for overall health and Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic muscles.

When to see your Doctor?

If you see your symptoms getting worse, then you should consult with your doctor or if you’ve stopped the treatment of UTI and you still notice the symptoms. This ensures that the infection does not spread to other parts of the body while providing proper care.
